Getting CPR certification in Los Angeles teaches you how to address a number of problems people around you will face. Along with American Heart Association course work, you can learn how to respond when someone appears to be having a stroke. Here is what the American Stroke Association suggests.
F.A.S.T.
The easiest way to remember what to do is following the acronym F.A.S.T. It shows you what to do to recognize someone is having a stroke.
- F : Face drooping. When you believe someone is suffering a stroke, checking the balance of the person’s face is a good place to start. If only half of their mouth is smiling, it’s a warning sign.
- A : Arm weakness. A second indicator is the arms test. If the person can only lift one (with the other dropping to the side of the body), there is risk the person is having a stroke. Numbness in the arms is another warning sign.
- S : Speech problems. Slurred speech or trouble articulating simple phrases suggests the person may be having a stroke. Ask the person to repeat a phrase. If he or she cannot do so smoothly, call for help. CPR classes in Los Angeles teaches you to recognize dangers like these even when you cannot solve them on the spot.
- T : Time to call 9-1-1. The end of F.A.S.T. is the action of calling for an ambulance. In the meantime, don’t leave the side of the person in question.
